We left Salisbury at about 8:15 am and reached our next place of interest about 2 hours later. The GPS instructions have been vital at times, but at other times we can't help but wonder about the logic of some instructions. It's taken us into some strange places.
In Exeter we were able to park (always a problem) close to the cathedral which, like so many other old buildings, has restoration activity underway. Exeter Cathedral is reputedly the "most decorated" cathedral in the UK. I'm happy to accept the word of the experts and agree that decoration abounds, although sadly many of the little and large figures adorning the pillars and portals are heavily eroded through time and weather. Although it isn't as vertically imposing as Salisbury Cathedral with its high spire, it does have quite a beautiful and balanced appearance - as long as you get far enough back to see the towers. If you are too close to the front it does look a little squat because the towers are not visible.
The Cathedral Café is decorated with many glass panels moved from the cathedral during restorative work and alterations.
Exeter looked like a pleasant and interesting place but unfortunately our time was very limited as we were bound for Cornwall where we will spend 3 nights. Judy has Cornish origins on her mother's side, so this is something of a pilgrimage for her.
