London - "We've been to a wedding!"

London, Saturday 12th July.  Wedding of Sam Yeates and Lynne Pierce.

The service was conducted in Christ's Chapel, Dulwich.  Just a short walk along the road was Dulwich College where the reception and party was held. It was a most enjoyable occasion.

The ship's boat "James Caird"
Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton
Shackleton?  "James Caird?  Isn't this about a wedding.  Yes, of course, but Sir Ernest Shackleton, the great polar explorer was a student and "old boy" of Dulwich College.  He and 5 members of his marooned polar expedition sailed over 800km through mountainous seas from Elephant Island to South Georgia to summon help so their shipmates could be rescued.  All were rescued in what is one of the great survival episodes of modern, perhaps all, times.  Read about it.  The boat is permanently on display at Dulwich College.  It was quite a thrill to see it - and appreciate just how small it was to survive the extreme conditions due to strength, fortitude and magnificent seamanship (and a bit of luck thrown in).
